ICON works by infiltrating a special light-cured resin into microscopic pores within selected enamel lesions, including certain early carious lesions and some white spots related to fluorosis or post-orthodontic demineralization. Once the resin penetrates and hardens, it reduces porosity and changes how light passes through the enamel, which can help blend the appearance of a white spot and, in early carious lesions, create a barrier that helps limit further progression.
Unlike bonding, ICON does not simply place a layer of restorative material over the surface. The low-viscosity resin penetrates into the porous enamel lesion, which can create a natural-looking improvement without removing healthy tooth structure. Results can be long-lasting, although the degree of improvement depends on the type and depth of the lesion.
How ICON Treatment Works — Step by Step
